February is National Time Management Month

To celebrate I have compiled a few quick and easy Time Management Tips for you…

1. Realize that you can’t control time. Time will pass whether you use the space provided or not. However, you can control how you USE the space in a specific time frame and HOW you do so will often make the difference between happiness and disappointment.

2. Schedule time to plan your use of time! Sounds so simple but most people don’t do it. It takes on average 8 minutes to plan your day – everyone can spend 8 minutes to plan a day of generally 15 wakeful hours. The time spent is far less than the time wasted and lost in NOT planning.

3. Know your priorities before planning. Follows along with the old saying, “If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you’ve arrived?” Well, if you don’t know what your priorities are, how do you know if the tasks and activities you are engaging in are going in the direction that you want your life to go? Make a list of the priorities in your life and make sure that the tasks you undertake and the activities you engage in reflect them. Behave accordingly.

Organizing in today’s world Series: Part Three

Peace of mind. Remember that concept?
Having balance. Less stress.

Can getting organized actually do that for us? Absolutely!

Imagine this: You walk in your home…you have a set location to put your things from the day, there is no junk laying around, you see no papers on countertops, cabinets are closed and the items in them are tidy inside. You can walk down your hallway and not trip on anything on the floor, you can go to your office or paperwork area and actually locate the piece of paper with the directions to the event you are going to for the evening. Yes. All this is possible and easy to achieve. Sounds pleasant doesn’t it? Yes…this is normal. This is attainable.

So you have now three excellent reasons to get order within your life: less wasted time, saving money on repeat purchases, and peace of mind…so what is stopping you? My guess is either overwhelm (where do I begin?!?!), lack of ability to schedule time to do the organizing, or simply no idea how to go about starting on such a task.

Professional Organizers know all about this and are here to help. Many times it’s just getting started which makes the task seem more doable. Getting help with the beginning process can make accomplishing the project doable. I can guarantee you that you will NOT get even a start without scheduling time to do this consistently. How much time and when? At least start with thirty minutes on a regular basis. Daily would be the smartest. Any less and you run the chance of the clutter gaining faster than the purging process. Not good.

Find a time you can commit to and schedule it like a medical appointment with yourself. Actually write it in your calendar. Of course, you must look at your calendar on a regular basis to have this work. Plan this for an entire week. Commit and do the time. A trick to help you stay on task: Use a timer for the thirty minutes and play some upbeat music while working through the stuff. Here are some techniques to make the process easier:

1. Start by going through and throwing out all obvious trash (don’t forget to recycle whenever possible)
2. After the above, begin at one end of a room and work your way around. Don’t skip around or you can end up making more of a mess than you started with.
3. When the timer goes off then stop. Success will come with the completion of the time allotted, not the task yet. The task is too big to be done in a day generally anyway.
4. Move all purged items out of the room/house immediately so they don’t end up going back somehow.

Organizing in today’s world Series: Part Two

Another excellent reason to get order in your life is, if nothing else, you can save money.

Countless times when I work with a person who has stuff everywhere, invariably, we unearth the same item several times in different places. Here’s how that happens: You buy a widget. Come home, perhaps use the widget and then leave it somewhere that makes no sense or it gets moved or buried after a bit of time. You go to look for the widget and lo and behold, you can’t find it anywhere. So after a few attempts, you resolve that you will need to go out and buy another one. Maybe you are lucky and you only do this once. But, if you are like most people you will do this repeatedly. In organizing a person’s home I have located up to 6 of the same item in various locations, some near one another and some never even used. Now if this widget cost only about a dollar, that’s one thing, but if it was more, then this is money wasted, not to mention the time to either find another one or at least go out and purchase the widget again. And sometimes even again.

I’d like to propose a new concept: See if you can get along without the widget in the first place! Can you even imagine how much simpler your life would be with less stuff around? I can attest to the fact that it is extremely freeing and calming.

If you determine that you really do need the widget, then you need to consciously figure out where you will store it. It needs a permanent home. Somewhere that makes sense, like in an area where you will use it is a good idea. Make it easy to reach and see. Say it out load to yourself, “I’m putting this in the cabinet near the stove” so you are paying attention instead of just tossing it somewhere randomly.

Organizing in today’s world Series: Part One

Why Bother?

With so many stressors in our society today, getting organized is more important now than ever before. Why, you may ask, would someone spend (never waste) time purging through old stuff and junk in their home or office to simplify when the majority of the country is fast-peddling to get ahead or at least back to where they once were? With countless layoffs, businesses closing or reducing hours due to lack of customers, it seems that just making an income and trying to retain the ‘status quo’ would be good enough.

Well, it’s not.

This is the time to rein in on what we have, what we can live without and what we might need to sustain us through whatever may come.

For one, the average person wastes so much time looking for lost items in their home, this alone is a good reason to finally get order in your life. Often the item in need is buried under junk that shouldn’t exist in the environment in the first place. Do you find you are always searching for at least one item on a regular basis, keys perhaps?

Two reasons this could be happening: 1) you don’t have a regular place you can put them without something happening to them – they fall off a counter or get moved by someone in the house, or even buried under something through the course of the time they are sitting in that spot, or 2) you get distracted or are absentminded and just let them fall where they may upon entering your home or office and then forget where they landed after you deposited them randomly.

Learn to be mindful of where you are placing something. It is wise to actually say OUT LOUD, “I’m putting the keys on the kitchen counter on the corner” to yourself so you can get it into your memory better and it makes you stop to pay attention. You will have a MUCH better chance of finding your keys this way!

Welcome!

Well, I am finally doing a blog. I have resisted this for over a year, but the time has come.  I am excited to share some of the information I have gathered on my journey of coaching individuals with ADHD/ADD and Organizing thousands of individuals through my private consulting as well as through seminars and my books.

Organizing those with ADHD/ADD has been a passion of mine as there are some more challenging situations in dealing with the impulsivity, inability to focus,  and time management difficulties that plague people with ADHD/ADD. Blog entries will address and touch upon many of these.  Feel free to ask questions on this site and I will do my best to answer them…

Challenges clearing clutter in your environment?

It is typically the overwhelm that prevents a person from tackling a purging job either in their home or office.  Getting started is really the hardest part. Tip:  Have a kitchen timer handy (go out an buy one if you don’t have one – the one on the over or microwave won’t be effective enough) and bring it to the area you are working in.  Set it for 20 minutes.  Yes, 20 minutes.  Start in one corner of the room and work from the top down (like you would have another choice on that) and have a large lawn trash bag next to you.  Work as fast as you can to throw out the trash.  You know, those items you forgot you saved and they are now obsolete, the broken thing that never made it into the garbage in the first place…get rid of them now.  If something doesn’t service you, then it needs to go. If it’s unused, unwanted, broken or ugly – it needs to go now.
